Cross Platform provides information about how the programs and files on a Macintosh can be used with Windows-based computers. It also functions as an excellent disk-cataloguing tool. There are three main types of user who will need it :

ΓÇó Users needing to share files with Windows-based computers.
ΓÇó Macintosh users needing to work on Windows computers.
ΓÇó Users wishing to catalogue and analyse the files on their computer.

Problems arising when sharing with or moving to Windows computers

ΓÇó Programs (or 'applications') on the Macintosh may not be available under Windows. Cross Platform tells you whether the applications it finds have versions for Windows, or whether they are not needed under Windows at all.
ΓÇó Files (or 'documents') on the Macintosh may not be readable under Windows. Cross Platform analyses the files it finds in great depth, informing you of whether, and how they are readable under Windows. It will recommend MacLink, from DataViz if appropriate, and discern whether the file can be used directly without translation with the Windows version of the software.
ΓÇó File names on the Macintosh will often be unusable under Windows. Each variant of Windows (3.1, 95, NT) has a different set of rules for allowable file names. Furthermore, files require a three-letter extension (e.g. .DOC) to be used under Windows. Cross Platform identifies many of these problems, and we recommend using NameCleaner, also by Sig Software, to remedy them.
